Diversity experiences
Canada 2015
During Spring Semester, 2015, the University of Mary Music Department took the Jazz Ensemble, Vocal Jazz, and Steel Band on tour to Canada. While there, we were able to perform for students, work with them during rehearsals, and talk with them during their free time. Working with these students was a wonderful experience, and I remember talking with one particular student about the differences in University life between Canada and America as he was looking at possibly coming to the University of Mary. This tour made stops in Winnipeg, Dauphin, and Brandon.
Chicago 2015
Also during the Spring Semester, 2015, our Concert Choir and Concert Band went on tour to Chicago. This tour was the first time I had any real experience in an urban area. We performed, worked with the students, and were able to talk with them much like the Canada tour. One particular school I remember was an all boys school. It was very interesting to see the dynamic in the school and the differences from the general public school setting that I have been used to for much of my life. This tour made stops at Fenwick High School, Loyola Academy, Mother McAuley High School, Mount Carmel High School and a Mass at St. Peter's and Old Saint Pats.
